We all know flan for it’s indulgence and luxurious consistency. In the dessert world, flan one of the more difficult recipes to make. The baking technique is quite technical due to the caramel and water bath needed. This recipe is easy to put together and takes away the technical pressure! Make it once and you’ll know how to make flan like the back of your hand.
The Ingredients ( adapted from IsabelEats.com)
- 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can of evaporated milk
- ¾ cup of sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
First, preheat oven to 350°. Make the caramel. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and pour in sugar. Stir sugar constantly to avoid burning. Stir sugar until it’s dissolved and reaches an amber color. Immediately pour caramel into baking dish, tilting the dish so that the caramel spreads evenly. Set baking dish aside.
Next, make the custard. In a blender, add sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until mixture is smooth and creamy. Pour custard in baking dish, making sure the caramel is cooled.
Then, place baking dish into a larger pan with high sides. Open the oven door and pull out a rack. Carefully, place pan on top of the rack. Pour hot water into the large pan halfway up the sides. Ensure that no water touches the custard. Finally, tent the pan with aluminum foil and slide rack back into the oven.
Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. After bake time, carefully remove pan from the oven. Slowly take off foil because the steam will be hot. Take smaller baking dish out of water bath. Let flan cool to room temperature. Once it is cool, cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
To serve, run a knife along the edges of the dish to release flan. Put a platter upside down on the dish and swiftly, flip the dish. The flan and caramel should be on the platter! Slice into your flan and enjoy! 😋
