Gantry Plaza State Park

Recently, Karen, one of my best friends and a really awesome photographer, celebrated her birthday. Renny and I decided to take her out to eat and chill. We chose to go to Gantry Plaza State Park because Karen loves the water, plus she had never been there before. PLUS, there is there restaurant there named “Blend on the Water,” so it was the perfect fit.

None of us had ever been to Blend before, but we had high expectations since everyone and their moms goes there. Their menu was pretty small, which was a good thing because that meant they actually took the time to prepare the food.
I don’t see the exact name of the entrees we all got, because it was called “Bistec de Pollo”, but judging from the menu on their website, it closely resembles the “Pollo a La Plancha.” Renny paired his meal with seltzer water while Karen and I opted for Virgin Piña Coladas. I didn’t take any pictures because honestly I was too hungry to resist my meal in front of me.

Pls don’t hate me for not getting any food pics!

Our entree came with a good-sized chicken breast, white rice, beans, a lime, and a sweet-fried plantain cut into half. We also got a side of fries to share. The chicken was flavorful but it was on the dry side, so that kind of killed the experience. I think it tasted better when you squeeze the lime over it, other than that it’s not the best. Paired with the rice, it was decent. I didn’t try the beans, but Karen said it was soft and both Karen and Renny agreed they were good. My favorite part was the plantain. It was really sweet and cooked to perfection! Renny thought the fries sucked and said “it was drier than my microwave.” (Weird analogy, but okay). Karen says they were burnt af. Me, well, I didn’t have a problem with them. They were fine to me.

Renny says his seltzer water paired with lime was really great. He says you can’t really mess that up and that the lime gave it a nice flavor. Karen didn’t really enjoy her Virgin Piña Colada. She says it was different, but I guess not in a good way. I personally enjoyed it. Although they kind of ruined it for me when they brought to my attention that it tasted like yogurt. I guess the thought of having yogurt in my drink was weird to me. Nonetheless, I really liked it.

After the restaurant we made our way into the park.  The restaurant was right next to the famous Pepsi Cola sign and the East River, so of course we had to take some nice pictures while walking down the pathway.

Practically the Trademark of Long Island City!

Isn’t the view amazing?? 😍

Finally, we found a roomy grassy area shaded by a couple of trees. We spread our blankets and sat down.  I brought along my board game Sorry! and my Uno cards for us to play with. Playing games like that is one of our favorite ways to pass the time and just hang out. So we sat there, played our games, enjoyed the wind, scenery and of course, each other’s company.

Sorry! AKA the perfect game for petty people!

Ah yes, another classic game that ruins friendships! 😂

After we played a few rounds of our games, we decided to get some cake since we didn’t have any dessert from the restaurant. We packed up our stuff and decided to sit by the water for a bit before we left the park. Naturally, we had a whole photo-shoot by the water, but I’ll show you only a couple pics.

Casually chillin’ on the rocks.

Taking in the views.

Now, we’re not technically suppoooooosed to be on the rocks, but hey, gotta live like Larry sometimes, am I right?

Be cautious when #Livin’LikeLarry.

After Karen finished taking pictures of me, she let me borrow her camera and I got to fill her shoes and take some pics of my own.

Karen #Livin’LikeLarry as she’s not only on the rocks, but also tries to touch the water.

Renny being a good civilian, not on the rocks, taking in the views of the city and the NYC Ferry.

I had to get them side profiles 😎.

Finally, it was time to go. I wish we had more time to spend at the park, but it was getting late. We walked about five minutes away to this bakery called Cannelle LIC. Again, I didn’t take any pictures, I’m the worst, I know. Anyways, Karen and I shared a mini Creole cake and Renny got a Lemon Tart. The Creole cake was smooth, creamy and simply delicious. It was a little bit too sweet for me towards the end, but I still highly recommend it. It’s one of the best cakes I’ve ever eaten. The Lemon Tart on the other hand was absolutely terrible. I hated it. I don’t even think the restaurant made it bad, I just think I don’t like Lemon Tarts. Renny said it was just okay. He wouldn’t order it again. Karen said it was manageable, but sour. After I tasted my first- and last- Lemon Tart, I swore to never eat it from anywhere ever again!

Literally the face I made when trying to swallow the Lemon Tart.

After the cafe, we made our way home. I really enjoyed our day out. I hope Karen enjoyed her birthday outing too. Gantry Plaza State Park will always be one of my favorite places to go, both day and night. I can’t wait to go again!

You’ll always have my heart, Gantry Plaza State Park ❤️.
